Project Schedule

• COMPLETE Summer - Fall 2025: Phase 1 Community Engagement. Develop corridor goals and project concepts using feedback from the community, policy and guidance from adopted plans, and technical engineering constraints.
• COMPLETE Fall - Winter 2025: Phase 2 Community Engagement. Throughout the months of October, November, and December 2025 the project team refined the preferred concept design and finalized the design layout. The bikeway extension's design was informed by feedback from summer and fall 2025 engagement, and technical engineering constraints.
• UPCOMING Fall - Winter 2026: Utility Work. In preparation for the Wabasha Bikeway Extension construction, the City of Saint Paul is anticipating utility work to begin in 2026. Xcel Energy plans to complete the work moving from the north end of the corridor to the south. Expect lane reductions as work progresses with traffic flow being maintained throughout the project corridor. 

Next Phases of Work 

• Fall - Winter 2026: Xcel Energy will be completing utility work to prepare for the Wabasha Bikeway Extension construction. Please plan for traffic impacts due to lane reductions throughout the project corridor.
• Spring - Fall 2027: Bidding and Construction. The reconstruction of Wabasha/St Peter will take most of spring, summer, and fall. City staff will provide regular updates to the community about construction impacts, detours, and progress.

Historical Sites on the Corridor

The corridor features several historical sites that contribute to the character of downtown Saint Paul. The project team is committed to being mindful of the potential impacts on these landmarks. We welcome public input to help prioritize what matters most when considering changes to the roadway. Historic sites along the corridor include:

• New Astor Theater
• Eisenmenger Meat Market
• Fitzgerald Theater (formerly the Sam S. Schubert Theater)
• Minnesota Arts & Sciences Center
• History Theatre building
• Twin Cities Rapid Transit Company Building
• Colonnade Hotel
• Minnesota State Capitol Mall Historic District
• State Veterans Services Building
